ANS 222 Young Horse Training

Provides hands-on training. The student is assigned a young horse to train for the term. The training consists of halter breaking, leading, sacking, longeing, trailer loading and handling the feet. Saddling, bitting, ground driving and early stages of riding are taught, as well as grooming, safety and use of equipment.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Safety teach a horse to halter and lead, and train a horse in basic showmanship skills. Desensitize a horse to foreign and frightening objects. Use a round pen to teach a horse to listen and respect his handler. Teach a horse to tie, become accustomed to wearing tack, and load in a horse trailer. Teach a horse to ground drive and lunge. Teach a horse to stand quietly while being mounted. Use opening, direct and indirect rein, as well as correct seat and leg aids to teach a horse to move freely forward and be correctly balanced while being ridden. Work as a group to maximize animal husbandry and horse center maintenance. Communicate professionally and respectfully with a client.
