OTA 124 Physical Health Theory & Practice

Explores physical health conditions and the occupational performance challenges commonly associated with these conditions. Students learn theory and practice skills for performing assessments and providing interventions (preparatory, purposeful, and occupation-based) for occupational therapy clients with physical health challenges. Safety, documentation, and physical health promotion are addressed.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Demonstrate basic understanding of a variety of physical health conditions commonly seen in occupational therapy practice. Demonstrate basic understanding of the impact that client factors & performance skills, activity demands, and environmental contexts have on the clientäó»s occupational performance when the client has a physical health condition. Demonstrate basic understanding of the process of occupational therapy as it pertains to physical health practice settings, and the OTAäó»s particular role in that process. Steps in that process will include the following: gathering data to contribute to the evaluation; contributing to the development of the intervention plan and intervention strategies; implementing select interventions in a safe, effective, and ethical manner; monitoring and assessing client response to intervention; educating clients and caregivers; communicating with multiple audiences both verbally and in writing. Demonstrate basic understanding of select occupational therapy interventions commonly used with the client who has a physical health condition.
