HORT 255 Herbaceous Ornamental Plants

The identification and culture of herbaceous plant materials including perennials, annuals, groundcovers, ornamental grasses, and bulbs commonly grown in Oregon. Develops plant identification skills using recognition of visual details of form, texture, size, leaves, flowers, and fruit.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Learn plant characteristics and nomenclature of common herbaceous perennials, annuals, ornamental grasses, and flowering bulbs grown in Oregon. Learn how to select plants for sustainable and functional landscapes. Identify basic plant structures. Develop an understanding of the cultural requirements, including soil, water, light, and temperature for herbaceous plants grown in Oregon. Recognize common pests and diseases of herbaceous plants and learn how to avoid them and diminish their impact using cultural methods and biological control.
