HORT 251 Temperate Tree Fruit, Berries, Grapes, and Nuts

This course covers fruit and nut crops for temperate zones. Emphasis is placed on scientific and common names, plant adaptation, basic morphology, major cultivars, and markets. Students explore concepts of sustainable agriculture and environmental responsibility within the context of fruit and nut production.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Explain the nature of the fruit and nut industry in the Willamette Valley. Identify economically important fruit and nut crops grown in the Willamette Valley. Understand cultural requirements for temperate fruit and nut crops. Identify economically important pests associated with temperate tree fruits, berries, grapes, and nuts. Understand market demands, including, small scale, direct markets and large scale export producers. Evaluate environmentally responsible practices of crop production disease control and the economic costs associated with each practice.
