NUR 101B Fundamentals of Nursing Practice

The first course in the lab series. Applies theory from the didactic portion of the curriculum to clinical practice. Focuses on the application of the fundamental principles of health and illness, infection prevention and control, pain, nutrition, elimination, sleep/rest, mobility, mental health, fluid and electrolytes, and evidenced-based practice to clinical practice. Engages students in legal-ethical principles in documentation, confidentiality, and communication. Develops abilities in select nursing skills and physical assessment in the lab, simulation, and clinical settings. Required: Admission to the Nursing program.

Prerequisite: BI 231 Human Anatomy & Physiology and MTH 095 Intermediate Algebra, both with a grade of C or better.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Management of Care: Use evidence-based research to plan care and develop a nursing care plan with one diagnosis. Safety and Infection Control: Protect client from injury and apply principles of infection control. Health Promotion and Maintenance: Reinforce basic health promotion and self-care education to patients. Psychosocial Integrity: Demonstrate therapeutic nurse-patient relationship to meet patients needs. Basic Care and Comfort:  Perform and demonstrate the basic Registered Nurse functions to promote care and comfort. Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies: Demonstrate knowledge of oral medication administration and prepare oral medications in a simulated care setting. Reduction of Risk Potential: Perform screening tests and identify appropriate interventions. Physiological Adaptation: Apply beginning pathological, physiological, and behavioral science concepts to the care of one patient and performs a timed, comprehensive physical assessment in the simulated care setting. Professional Engagement: Identify the nursing student role in a healthcare setting and participates in reflective practice.
