NUR 102A Introductory Medical-Surgical Care

The second course in the lecture series. Further develops the core concepts required for professional nursing practice. Contains topics related to nursing care of patients with cardiopulmonary disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, metabolic disorders, digestive disorders, general surgical procedures, wound care, diabetes, genito-urinary, and introductory mental health concepts. Covers how to identify patient problems/nursing diagnosis, plan, and implement basic nursing care. Required: Admission to the Nursing program.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Management of Care: Identify priority client problems and appropriate nursing actions to safely and effectively meet the client needs. Safety and Infection Control: Identify concepts of infection control and safety in the medical-surgical setting. Health Promotion and Maintenance: Identify and describe the nursing role and responsibility to reinforce basic health promotion and self-care education to clients. Psychosocial Integrity: Apply the nursing process to meet the cultural and mental health needs of clients. Basic Care and Comfort: Apply knowledge of client pathophysiology to health/illness states in the medical-surgical setting. Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies: Identify common pharmacological agents and their indications utilized in the medical-surgical setting. Reduction of Risk Potential: Identify potential complications or health problems related to existing conditions, treatments, or procedures in the medical-surgical setting. Physiological Adaptation: Identify nursing care and rationale based on pathophysiological and behavioral science concepts. Professional Engagement: Identify practices within the legal and ethical parameters of the nursing profession focusing on HIPAA, documentation and role responsibility.
