PBT 100 Phlebotomy

Students will learn basic phlebotomy practices. This course provides information on the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and standard precautions. Students will receive instruction on how to prepare the blood collection site, how to choose the proper collection tools and how to handle the transportation, processing and management of collected samples. Required: Admission to the Phlebotomy program.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Define infection control. Describe the importance of specimen collection and specimen integrity in the delivery of patient care. Identify collection equipment, various types of additives used, special precautions necessary and substances that can interfere in clinical analysis of blood constituents. Recite standard operating procedures to collect specimens. Explain quality assurance and quality control in the Phlebotomy practice.
