HE 220 Intro: Epidemiology/Health Data Analysis
Introduction to epidemiology and the use of elementary statistics for students in health-related studies. This course is designed to provide preparatory background for taking subsequent course in epidemiology and health data analysis offered by the Department of Public Health. This course introduces measure of disease frequency, analytical epidemiology, study designs, experimental design, and basic elements of descriptive statistics and inferential statistics.

Prerequisite: Completion of
MTH 095: Intermediate Algebra or higher with a grade of C or better.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Explain basic concept and principals of epidemiology. Demonstrate an understand the basic concepts, constructs, and principles fundamental to epidemiology. Demonstrate an understanding of essential concepts of infectious and chronic diseases. Demonstrate an understanding of measures of mortality rates and ratios. Gain an understanding of the basic types of research and uses of statistics. Describe and compute the measures of central tendency, mean, median, and mode. Describe and compute the measure of variability, range, variance, and standard deviation. Learn to work with various statistical distributions. Understand the importance and process of sampling in research and various research designs. Demonstrate and understanding of epidemiological hypothesis and evaluation. Describe and compute tests of significance, point estimates and confidence intervals. Demonstrate the ability to think logically and critically about an investigation in epidemiology and comments critically upon the reasoning leading to the stated conclusions.
