AT 277A Horse Breeding Management

Familiarizes students with all aspects of reproductive management of the horse. Reproductive physiology, estrus cycles, breeding management, mare and foal care, stallion handling and recordkeeping are covered.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Understand and diagram the detailed reproductive anatomy and physiology of both the stallion and the mare. Diagram the estrous cycle of the mare. Perform a semen evaluation. Understand the process of cooling and freezing semen. Understand the functionality of synthetic hormones, and their effect on the mare and stallion. Be able to synthetically regulate and estrous cycle for insemination with frozen semen or embryo transfer. Trouble shoot fertility issues. Discuss the three stages of labor, including average lengths, presentations, and abnormalities. Understand basic health management of the post partum mare and the newborn foal.
