G 201 Physical Geology I
Introduces physical geology and fundamental geologic principles. Includes topics such as Earth's interior, tectonic processes, and their influence on mountains, volcanoes, earthquakes, rocks, and minerals. Laboratory component highlights rocks, minerals, and geophysical data. Suitable for science majors and non-majors. Geology courses do not need to be taken in sequence.
Prerequisite
MTH 075 or
MTH 098 with a grade of C or better, or equivalent.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Use plate tectonic theory to explain the occurrence and distribution of the continents, ocean basins, mountain ranges, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Identify different rocks and minerals based on their diagnostic characteristics. Interpret rocks and minerals in terms of the processes that formed them. Evaluate potential geologic hazards and their impacts to society specific to the Pacific Northwest. Use the scientific process to gather data and make predictions.
