Provides the student with an opportunity to explore the musical, social, and cultural aspects of hip-hop culture and rap music from its birth in the 1970’s to its development through today. Explores important artists and landmark recordings in this style.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Identify hip-hop and rap music and its sub-genres by stylistic traits. Demonstrate an understanding of hip-hop and rap music history and its relationship to society from its birth in the mid 1970's through today. Identify, evaluate and study the roles of African-American culture in hip-hop and rap music. Describe the impact of hip-hop culture and rap music on individuals, local communities, our nation and the world as a whole. Differentiate between the stylistic traits of key hip-hop and rap artists and the eras of hip-hop and rap music history.
