PBT 190 Phlebotomy Practicum

Allows students to gain a practical phlebotomy experience while participating in a supervised learning experience in a health care field. Requires the completion of competencies and working a specified number of hours to prepare to sit for for the national American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) examination upon graduation. Required: Admission to the Phlebotomy program.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Perform venipuncture on a patient with proper technique using a vacutainer. Perform venipuncture on a patient with proper technique using a syringe. Perform a finger stick on a patient with the proper technique. Perform a heel stick on a patient with the proper technique. Perform an arterial blood gas with the proper technique and patient care. Demonstrate effective communication techniques with patients, family members, and colleagues using verbal, written, and information technology tools/devices.
