NUR 102B Introductory Medical-Surgical Practice

This is the second course in the lab series where students begin to apply theory from the didactic portion of the curriculum to clinical practice. Students apply the fundamental principles nursing care of the previous term and newly introduced concepts related to introductory medical-surgical nursing. Students engage in legal-ethical principles in documentation, confidentiality, and communication. Students develop their abilities in select nursing skills and physical assessment in the lab, simulation, and clinical settings. Students begin to actively manage and direct nursing care safely and effectively.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Identify priority patient problems and begin to implement appropriate nursing actions safely and effectively to meet the patient needs at beginning level. Engage in ongoing patient assessment recognizing normal findings and begin to identify abnormal findings and changes in the patient condition. Engage in professional communication with peers and colleagues; establish rapport with families using verbal, written, and information tools/devices at a beginning level. Use established protocols to reinforce basic health promotion and self-care education to patients; recognize cultural needs of patients when providing care at a beginning level. Use reflective practice to identify learning needs; function as a novice-nursing student in the clinical setting. Practice within the legal and ethical parameters of the nursing profession focusing on HIPAA, documentation and role responsibility. Function as a novice nursing student in the the clinical setting; begin to develop logic and problem-solving skills and engage in directing care. Exhibit acquisition of nursing skills in the lab, SIM, and clinical settings to safely and effectively provide and direct nursing care. 9.
