Studies music through the elements or language of music, musical forms and the history of music. This includes the identification and analysis of a variety of different culturally and historically defined practices related to the development of music, its composition and performance.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Identify the elements of music in standard repertoire from Western and Non-western musical traditions. Describe a musical work using analytical and critical listening skills. Match key composers and musical style traits to historical and cultural determinants of Western and Non-Western music. Explain the technical and expressive aspects of selected music and performances, demonstrating understanding of the elements of music and form. Develop and support interpretations of varied works, citing the use of the elements of music (including form), and the context of each work.
