Includes instruction on reproductive organs, hormones, heat diagnosis, semen collection, insemination techniques, semen evaluation, pregnancy testing, freezing and dilution methods. Hands-on experience is stressed. Note: Recommended for second-year students.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Identify and describe functions of male and female reproductive anatomy. Detect estrus in sows/gilts and cows/heifers in standing heat. Pass the cow's cervix and enter the uterus with an artificial insemination gun. Develop an estrus synchronization program for cattle. Practice effective semen handling techniques for proper insemination.
