WR 227 Technical Writing

Introduces students to the types of writing they will encounter in business, industry, the academic world and government. It examines the rhetorical nature of writing and asks students to think critically about content, audience, argument and structure. Students will learn how to effectively design documents, present instructions, create proposals and produce technical reports.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Analyze audience and purpose as part of a process of writing technical documents. Use standard formats for persuasive and descriptive technical writing definition, mechanism, descriptions, resumes, application letters, instruction, proposal, and technical reports. Use document design strategically to meet needs of diverse reader and purposes. Know the process of preparing a research based technical report, including planning, evaluating and reporting on the results of primary interview and surveys and secondary internet and library research. Recognize and evaluate ethical issues related to technical communications. Use outside sources to support writing without plagiarizing. Work effectively alone and collaboratively with peers, teams and supervisors. Locate, evaluate and use computer and information technologies efficiently, ethically, and productively to support research, writing, and presenting of technical information. Apply the principles of technical writing in increasingly diverse venues web page, e mail, electronically delivered documents.
