SMT 113 Social Media Privacy, Ethics & Legal Issues

This course provides students with a foundation that enables them to identify and analyze ethical issues in relation to social media. Case studies discuss the role of the media and social media in society in relation to privacy online; free speech; opinion-oriented media, and editorials relate to our freedoms. Students will explore the legal responsibilities associated with social media.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Understand and effectively utilize copyright issues related to social media. Explain the characteristics of digital content including the life of information, the restrictions of the communication medium, and the ownership of the information. Understand, discuss, and acknowledge limitations of account and sharing policies in various social networking platforms including ethical violations. Recognize liability related participation in social media. Discuss policies to manage a public social media account and the distribution of information.
