PSG 103 Therapeutic Modalities I

Overview of the preparation and role of the polysomnography technician as a health care professional. Topics include professionalism, understanding physician orders, charting, health/illness continuum, therapeutic, communication, functional cardiopulmonary anatomy, and the basics of assessment.

Prerequisite

Required: Obtaining a High School Diploma or GED, securing transportation to/from the clinical site, having a current CPR card, passing a criminal background check, passing a drug screen, and obtaining all required immunizations necessary to work in a medical environment.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Identify the 7 rules of medical ethics. Identify professional organizations associated with Polysomnography. Follow HIPPA regulations. Recognize patient safety concerns. Identify methods of infection control or equipment, staff and patients. Acquire and analyze patient assessment date specifically BP, RR, SATS, EKG, and HR. Perform proper charting. Identify the components of the cardiovascular system and their function. Demonstrate understanding of ventilation and oxygenation and how it affects the patient. Demonstrate understanding of emergency responses, protocols and interventions. Determine the completeness and appropriateness of physician order to ensure valid data collection. Determine if special testing requirements are necessary based on patient history.
