MTH 264 Introduction to Matrix Algebra

An introductory matrix methods course for students majoring in sciences and engineering. Topics include matrix algebra, matrix transformations, determinants, systematic solutions to linear systems, and eigenvalue problems. Prerequisite: MTH 252 or equivalent with a grade of C or better.

Credits

Prerequisite

MTH 252 Integral Calculus with a grade of C or better.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Convert between linear systems of equations, matrix equations, and vector equations and solve each using Gaussian elimination and matrix methods. Determine if a set of vectors is linearly dependent or independent and find their span. Calculate and interpret the determinant of a matrix. Compute matrix inverses when they exist. Find matrix representations of linear transformations and interpret them. Compute eigenvalues and eigenvectors of matrices with real entries and use them in applications.
